Daily infections hold steady, active cases are on rise

. There were little signs yet of the feared second wave of the pandemic as nationwide cases totalled up to 43,279 on Thursday, a slight drop from Wednesday's count of 44,739, as per data collated by TOI from state governments. Daily cases have stayed under 45,000 this week, with no surge visible so far as compared to last week's numbers. With Thursday's addition, the country's Covid-19 caseload has gone past 93 lakh.

To tame prices, govt cuts import duty on palm oil

The government on Thursday reduced the basic customs duty (BCD) on crude palm oil to 27.5% in its bid to increase availability of the edible oil in the domestic market. The current BCD on crude palm oil is 37.5%. The reduced rate will come to effect from Friday. The move comes barely a week after the issue of rising prices of edible oil came up for discussion at a meeting of the Group of Ministers headed by home minister Amit Shah.

Tributes paid to martyrs on 12th anniversary of 26/11 attack

Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, state home minister Anil Deshmukh and environment minister Aaditya Thackeray paid their respects at the newly-built memorial at the police headquarters in south Mumbai. Remebering their personnel killed in the attack, the Maharashtra Police in a tweet said, "A tribute to the ones who sacrificed their lives to safeguard the rest!"
